It is worth noting that Le Prieuré is owned by Jean André Charial, who, in addition to being a reputable businessman in the luxury hotel industry, is also a Michelin-starred chef, with two stars granted for the Ousteau de Baumanière and one for La Cabro d’Or.
He has entrusted the restaurant at the Prieuré to a team of young and very talented chefs who will, of course, do all they can to gain Michelin recognition in the form of one or more of its famous stars.
The provision of only the best ‘haute cuisine’ is one of the pre-requisites of the Relais et Châteaux hotel group and will be just one of the quality points that will encourage guests to come and stay at the hotel.
History
In 1322, the Cardinal Arnaud de Via, one of the richest princes of the church, nephew of Pope Jean XX11, ordered the construction of a palace at Villeneuve-lez-Avignon.
In 1333, two years before his death, he offered part of the palace to a chapter of 12 canons, 12 Priests and two deacons, all managed by a senior church member, in order to found a priory - Le Prieuré.
The canons built the cloister on part of the main courtyard of the cardinal’s property and added a fortified tower to the chapel, overlooking the village streets.
At the time of the French Revolution, in 1789, all property owned by the canons was sold off to the public. Most of this grand property became, after having been a boarding house for artists and painters, a hotel. Successive restorations then took place leading up to the construction of the Atrium and swimming pool in 1972.
Sold on in 2006, the hotel has been completely renovated again over the 2006/7 winter period, re-opening on April 5th in its current form.
About the hotel and grounds
The apartments are divided into three buildings, all renovated with respect to the original charm and character of the property.
The Prieuré is the oldest building, its construction having started in 1322.
It consists of 11 apartments: numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16 and 17. Lots 5, 11 and 15 are still available here. Almost all the Prieuré apartments overlook the magnificent terrace planted with plane trees which opens onto the reception, thus benefiting from the original charm of on old Provençal house.
The Chapitre here is another old character building that is an extension of the Prieuré. The seven apartments (numbers 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 - of which 21, 22 and 26 are still available) are laid out on the upper floor (access both by lift and stairs), with the majority opening onto the interior courtyard. This was restored with the rest of the renovations and now houses an outdoor restaurant.
Most of the apartments in the Chapitre have beautiful terraces.
The Atrium is the most recent building, built in the 1970’s, using more modern methods of construction, such as reinforced concrete.
The building has three floors of apartments, with 17 apartments in total (numbers 31, 32, 33, 34, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 51, 52, 53, 54, 55 and 56 - seven lots still available here - 31, 33, 42, 43, 44, 54 and 55). The salons and meeting rooms, as well as the laundry room and breakfast room, all look out onto the swimming pool area. An enormous underground area serves as the stock and store rooms.
NB Updated end January 08.
The apartments in the various buildings were renovated to give each one its own character, but with a high quality finish in mind, in accordance with the requirements of the hotel group Relais et Châteaux.
The restoration respected the use of original materials as much as possible (with the use of terra cotta floor tiling for example). Where it was necessary to change the original features, only high quality materials were used.
All of the apartments are equipped with access to high speed broadband internet, with most having wireless access.
